I’m Free (Heaven helps the man)

“Heaven helps the man who fights his fear”

This sentence has captured me ever since I have heard this song, from the Footloose soundtrack, for the first time.

Whilst this movie is a little older (it was released in 1984) and I was about 10 years old when I first saw it, the message and music immediately captured me.

Even though I did not fully understand what Kenny was singing (I only started to learn English in my early teens), the feeling in his voice and music made me understand it pretty much straight away.

It’s all about fighting for what you love (human and/or other things in our life) and sometimes whilst we can’t run away from what is going on around us, we do have choices and we should remember that.

“I’m shaking the past making my breaks

Taking control

If that’s what it takes”

In the movie, the group of youngsters is fighting for the right to enjoy music, dance and sing and enjoy life to the soundtrack of their lives.

They are taking control and make it happen, with many hurdles to overcome, but they don’t back down.

What a great reminder for all of us to not give up, to let our voices heard and stand up for what we believe in. And most of all, follow our hearts, even when the road is bumpy and not straight.

I listen to this song every time I feel like giving up or feel life just sucks and I have no control over anything. It reminds me that every small decision I make with love and from the heart reduce fear and will lead me closer to becoming happier and towards the life I aim for.
