Silence is golden…
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can’t you understand?
Have you noticed how often people these days say something but it means nothing? Or what is being said is hurtful, disrespectful and not necessary?
I often think ‘’Silence is golden….it’s often wise to say nothing.’’
Words can do such harm when spoken without thinking and based on emotions such as rage, anger or even excitement! Sadly, over the years I had my fair share of these moments where I was the receiver and yes, also the one that ‘dished out’.
The wounds might turn into scars, but will never completely heal.
I believe we can learn to improve this and use our words wiser and hence make a change not just in us, but the people around us, too.
So what can we do to be more mindful when it comes to the spoken word?
Use words that build up and empower a human being. We are all equals, so we should talk to each other like that. Pay compliments, use positive words and be kind.
Know when it is best to stay silent. Sometimes not saying anything at all is best. Let it rest or give the person space to vent (without adding your opinion to the mix).
Sometimes a hug says it better than any words ever can. Although some might not be the ‘cuddly’ type, we all need reassurance in a different way. A hug is not only comforting but also can deepen a connection between two people.
Although these words in the Depeche Mode song are more aimed at lovers, I guess you can expand that to family and friends, too.
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
The right words at the right time might change someone’s life….or almost destroy it. So let’s be wise in choosing our words….
