Who is BTS?

Aussie ARMY Stories

“Who is BTS?” I asked my son back in 2016, when he would play their music out loud 24/7. I had never heard of them or even knew what K-pop was.

But I really enjoyed their music, and even though I didn’t understand a single word, I was curious what they looked like.
One day, my son showed me the Not Today music video and I was instantly blown away by their style, choreography and mesmerised by their beauty. I couldn’t even tell them apart, but soon enough, I knew all their names and recognised their own distinctive voices.

By 2018, I had fallen down the rabbit hole with no plans of ever coming out.

I found them at a time when I needed them the most. My parents had passed away years earlier. My siblings got a bit too greedy with their will, and I was left with the burden and the grieving. I was at my lowest and my stress levels, at my highest.

So, finding BTS was not just a blessing, but my therapy and my remedy.

I would mentally escape into another timeline for hours, just listening to their music until I finally regained my energy and got back to my old happy self again.

Their passion for their music is so intense, powerful and meaningful. I felt like I was in a world of my own because their voices were so calming, therapeutic and the melody was so addictive. Often singing and dancing to their music and sometimes also crying to the lyrics. But, somehow, it allowed me to let go, heal and free myself from what was holding me down. The only other artist who had this power over me, was Michael Jackson.

Last year, I had a brain tumour removed. My hubby and kids even brought some of my BTS favourites into hospital, knowing their energy would make my recovery a bit easier while trying not to focus too much on the pain.

I’m now a 62yr old proud ARMY and I’m not embarrassed to say bopping to their music, makes me feel like I’m 18 again, that’s why for me, music has no age limit. If it moves you, then you’re alive.

It’s crazy to think I have kids their age, who jokingly tease me about my obsession, but then again, they also spoil me with BTS merch, because they can see how much joy and energy these boys have put back into my life. We even started going to Korean restaurants and watching K-Dramas and recently, they also surprised me with a trip to South Korea – planned for next month.

So, who is BTS?

They are seven brilliant artists who started from the bottom to achieve the impossible. But with blood, sweat, tears, and the support of ARMY, they overcame obstacles and challenges because they believed in themselves and in each other. Their hard work has paid off and they have become an internationally successful K-Pop group.

I’m so grateful for their ability to heal so many people around the world with their music. They’re sincere, genuine and down to earth. Their words, their kindness and their love, feels so real, so precious and personal to all of us. #apobangpo
