Songs aren’t just songs – they not only speak to us but also make us feel understood. I am sure you had a song (or two) that held emotions too big for words such as grief, hope, excitement, resilience, all packaged up in a melody! I am sure you can relate.
For so many, Violeta Parra’s music does exactly that. She is more than just a musician, she was a storyteller, a poet, and a fearless artist who gave voice to the rawest human emotions. Her songs weren’t just to be listened to—they were to be felt.
In a recent podcast interview with Ericka Verba, historian, musician, and author of Gracias a la Vida: The Biography of Violeta Parra, we explored how Violeta’s music still resonates today, not just for its melodies but for its ability to hold life’s joys and struggles in the same breath.
Parra’s songs are a reminder that not everything can be put into words—but it can be sung, played, and felt.
Her music became an anthem for Chilean activists, exiled communities, and anyone who felt unseen. It was a form of healing, a protest, and a declaration of truth all at once.
And isn’t that what we are all after—what we long for? A way to express what we feel, especially when we can’t quite explain it?
In the interview, Ericka Verba shared how Parra’s music became the soundtrack to her own life—how the melodies and lyrics showed up at moments she didn’t expect, almost like messages from the universe. Have you ever had a song find you at the exact moment you needed it?
Violeta’s music teaches us that we don’t need to have the perfect words to express what’s in our hearts. Music—whether listening, singing, or playing—can be our voice when we don’t know what to say.
Her legacy also challenges us to be more open to feeling deeply—to embrace both gratitude and grief, hope and heartbreak. Because life isn’t one or the other. It’s both.
So, here’s something to reflect on: If you could translate your emotions into music the way Violeta did, what would that song sound like? Would it be joyful, defiant, bittersweet, or something in between?
Violeta Parra didn’t just write songs—she left behind a body of work that reminds us to feel deeply and live fully. If you haven’t yet explored her music, start with Gracias a la Vida—listen not just with your ears, but with your heart.
And if this post resonated with you, share it with someone who finds meaning in music—because the best songs are the ones we experience together
